Step 02:Let’s do family time

TODAY’S STEP:
Tom and Nancy’s third oldest daughter, Malliam, shows us how her family spends quality time together.

BIG IDEA:
Living from enough begins by discovering that we belong to Jesus.

MEMORY VERSE:
“Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.” Matthew 6:9–13

START a discussion with your family about belonging:

  • What does it mean to belong to something?
  • What are some things you and I belong to, or who are some people we belong with? Let’s name as many as we can think of.

READ MATTHEW 6:9–13

WATCH “ENOUGH LOVE”:

  • What stood out to you in the video?
  • What was the same as or different from our family?
  • What are some ways our family enjoys being together?

Say: There are people all over the world who love God and belong to his family. If God is “our Father,” how are we connected to families like Pastor Tom’s?

When Jesus came to earth, he helped people understand God’s family. In the Old Testament, God chose a people—they are called the Hebrews, Israelites or Jewish people—and he promised to use them to bless the whole world. God did that in Jesus. Jesus explained that he was the way the whole world would be blessed. God’s people— his family—were not just one group. Anyone could be part of God’s family by trusting in Jesus. Ultimately, Jesus died on the cross and rose from the dead to create a way for us to join God’s family. We didn’t do anything to earn or deserve our spot in the family, but God’s love brings us into his family.

PRAY

Say: Let’s close by praying the Lord’s Prayer a second time. When we begin by saying “our Father,” think about all Jesus did for you in order to bring you into God’s family and take a second in your own mind and heart to thank him for that.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

“Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.” Matthew 6:9–13
